The National Center for Oncological Hadrontherapy (CNAO) is specialized in cancer care, having built a multi-ion facility able to produce not only proton but also carbon ion beams. Carbon ion is the most advanced form of cancer therapy, able to generate a damage in the DNA of cancer cells three times higher than conventional radiotherapy, while limiting the risk of secondary cancers and preserving healthy tissues around the tumor.
Until today CNAO has treated more than 1.200 patients (75% with carbon ions and 25% with protons) affected by the following pathologies: ocular melanomas, meningiomas, chordomas, chondrosarcomas, pancreatic, hepatic, prostate tumors, salivary glands carcinomas, para-nasal sinuses tumors, skull base chondrosarcomas, vagina melanomas, aero-digestive sites melanoma, relapses requiring a re-irradiation in an area already treated with radiation therapy, pediatric solid tumors or any type of radioresistant or inoperable tumours.
