MEDICAL TOURISM IN CHINA: AN INCREASE OF 500% JUST IN 2016

According to a report published by the Chinese market leader about travelling, Ctrip, the market of Chinese medical tourism has grown by a staggering 500%, reaching a total of 500,000 outbound medical travels in 2016. According to this study, the type “Medical tourism” is ranked as the fourth most attractive in the “travel” sector among Chinese tourists, and was, in 2016, the market segment with the highest level of growth.

For Chinese tourist destinations, there is a potentially very lucrative market to consider, according to Ctrip, the Chinese medical tourist spends an average of 7,000 $ for their trips. In addition, Chinese travellers spend 3,500 $ on average, during trips in Europe, 2,500 $ for travel in Asia. In fact, the only type of trip with an average level of higher spending it’s tourism to the Poles, with all other types of tourism, the average spending for each trip, is lower.

Citing internal data, Ctrip, refers that the periodic medical check-ups have been the biggest slice of the market regarding the medical tourism in 2016, which represents over the 50% of all trips made to “general tourism.” The higher revenues from medical tourism products were obtained, mostly, with cosmetic surgery and genetic testing widely practiced in South Korea.

According to a survey by Hurun (Institute of Chinese search) health care is one of the issues that is most dear the Chinese wealthy class, in fact, more than 50% of respondents say that health care is a topic of primary interest. The interest in health shown by the Chinese rich class goes far beyond that expressed for shopping and “generic tourism”, further underscoring the importance of the healthcare market.

Among the customers Ctrip, Japan was the most popular destination in 2016, followed by South Korea, the United States, Taiwan, Germany, Singapore, Malaysia, Switzerland, Thailand and India. Japan, which we could define it as a forerunner in this field, has seen his government including medical tourism in its official growth strategy already in 2010, while in 2011, was one of the first destinations to introduce a specific visa for medical stays. Since then, Chinese tourists populate Japan, the Japan National Tourism Administration has also published a language guide in Chinese on how to make use of health services in Japan.

The primary source of medical tourists in outbound in China comes from most important Chinese cities, such as Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, along with the smaller cities Tianjin and Hangzhou, all this, probably is a reflection of the average level of well-being, rather high, of the residents of these cities.

Probably, with the growing interest in medical care by Chinese population and the development of specific products dedicated to medical tourism sector, the outbound market of patients, could not reach the 2016 numbers.
